Build a travel frame set
In April 2017, Christopher Engel published a workshop note on cengel-kites.de about a Traveler Frame-Set: a break-down frame for travelling with a quad-line kite without carrying a long tube.
The original page is no longer online. This archive keeps the intent, technical choices and known limitations, rewritten so the idea remains readable today. It is not an industrial plan or a universal recommendation; it is a workshop note, useful for understanding the compromises behind a travel frame.
Who is Christopher Engel?
Section titled "Who is Christopher Engel?"Christopher Engel is the pilot and builder behind cengel-kites, a German quad-line kite manufacture. His current site presents cengel-kites as small-batch work focused on precision, design and hand-built kites, including models such as the CE-Serie, Stealth and Apus.
He also flies with Sport Kite Team Solution. The team page on vierleiner-drachen.de introduces Marvin, Tim and Chriss as team “SOLUTION”, and the 2024 World Kite Cup also listed Christopher Engel as part of Team Germany.
The goal
Section titled "The goal"The starting point was simple: make the frame shorter to carry, without changing the character of Christopher’s kites.
The frame set had to work on his CE-Serie kites and on the Stealth. It therefore had to avoid a major change in flight feel, control response or leading-edge stiffness. That is the useful point in this archive: a travel frame is not just a normal frame cut into smaller pieces. Every joint adds weight, creates a locally stiffer area and can change how the kite loads, relaunches and transmits input.
To compensate for the extra weight and the local stiffening of the leading edge, Christopher used carbon arrow shafts with a 500 spine. In archery, spine describes shaft flex: the lower the number, the stiffer the shaft. In his notes, the 500-spine travel setup was therefore a little softer than a 300-spine frame, while staying at a comparable weight.
Traveler Frame-Set by cengel-kites
The construction idea
Section titled "The construction idea"The setup is built around three choices:
- Rods cut into short sections
- Lightweight hollow ferrules to reconnect the sections
- Internal shock cord to keep all parts together
Christopher chose lightweight hollow ferrules, similar in spirit to the ones he already used in his kites. Instead of gluing them permanently, he used a removable setup held with rubber rings.
That detail matters. A glued ferrule makes assembly simpler, but fixes the packed length. With unglued ferrules, the frame can be broken down further and the packed size can be reduced by another 10 cm if needed.
Internal shock cord
Section titled "Internal shock cord"Christopher then ran soft 3 mm shock cord through the rods and ferrules. The cord was kept under tension, then fixed with a knot behind a plastic archery insert.
The system has two advantages:
- The sections stay in the right order
- Assembly becomes much easier on the field
In practice, the shock cord works like it does in some tent poles: the parts stay connected, naturally line up in the right order and do not scatter into the grass, sand or bag.
Parts and figures
Section titled "Parts and figures"The original note listed the following figures:
- Packed length: 45 cm
- Weight: about 100 g
- Carbon arrow shafts, 500 spine
- 7 ferrules
- 7 rubber rings
- About 2 lengths of soft 3 mm shock cord
- 6 plastic archery inserts
Treat these as the figures for the prototype documented by cengel-kites, not as dimensions to copy without adaptation. The number of ferrules, shock-cord tension and section lengths depend on the kite model, rod inner diameter, available ferrules and the packed size you are trying to reach.
Field assembly
Section titled "Field assembly"During assembly, the benefit is clear: the parts stay together and the frame rebuilds without having to work out which section goes where. That was one of Christopher’s explicit goals: make setup simple, comfortable and hard to get wrong, even with more parts than a standard frame.
Once the kite is being used on holiday, a full breakdown is not always necessary between sessions. Christopher gave a very pragmatic tip: if the kite does not need to fly back home immediately, you can fold the leading edge at the usual points and leave the verticals whole. That keeps handling close to a normal kite and avoids a full travel-frame teardown every time.
The tricky part: teardown
Section titled "The tricky part: teardown"Assembly worked well, but Christopher also pointed out that teardown still had its traps.
On his kites, he preferred a very firm elastic connection between the vertical rods and the leading edge. That tension had two benefits: the kite responded more directly to input, and the rods protruded less. Less protruding rod also means less risk of catching grass, sand, a line or a bridle leg.
The tradeoff was that this tension made it harder to pull the leading edge frame out. While extracting the frame from the sleeve, the rubber rings could catch around the ferrules. You needed enough force to pull the frame out, but not brute force: it required some feel to avoid damaging the leading edge or shifting a joint.
After a full teardown, Christopher recommended folding the leading edge completely to check every ferrule. That may be the most important practical advice in the article: a travel frame adds joints, and every joint needs to be checked before packing or before the next flight.
What this setup changes
Section titled "What this setup changes"A travel frame solves a real transport problem, but it adds complexity.
Advantages:
- Much shorter packed size
- Parts stay connected thanks to the internal shock cord
- Assembly remains guided and fairly natural
- The frame can be adapted to fit a bag or suitcase
Limitations:
- Joints add weight
- The leading edge can become locally stiffer
- Full teardown needs more attention
- Rubber rings or ferrules can catch inside the sleeve
- Every joint becomes a point to inspect
For occasional travel, the compromise can make a lot of sense. For everyday use, a standard frame remains simpler, faster and easier to inspect.
Historical price
Section titled "Historical price"In the original article, Christopher wrote that the Traveler Frame-Set was already available on request for 99 euros, bag included, with the known teardown drawback still present. He also mentioned that he already had ideas to improve that point.
