The QuadKites.org project

QuadKites.org is a free, volunteer-run space dedicated to quad-line sport kites.

It is open to contributions and non-profit. The goal is not to replace existing initiatives, but to complement them, connect useful resources, and improve the content as we learn from other kite flyers.

The site is mainly written and maintained by Alban Kites, with help from contributors from the kite community.

We want to make quad-line kite knowledge easier to find, understand and reuse around three themes:

• individual, team and megateam flying;
• building or choosing kites and gear;
• sharing our experience.

In practical terms, this means passing on what we know and making existing content more accessible: tutorials, feedback, debates… Kite flyers have been sharing their knowledge for over 30 years in clubs, forums and more recently on social networks.

We reference existing resources, summarize them and translate them when that helps more pilots use them. A few examples:

• the return of Addict kite le mag as an archive;
• documentation and translation of over 100 team maneuvers;
• publication of quad-line construction tutorials by enthusiasts: Polo kites, Yves Ganne and Punk sportif;
• the update and translation of Tom kite building site, an excellent website for building a dual-line kite.

A quad-line kite is a kite flown with four lines. It can move in every direction, stop in mid-air and perform tricks, ballets and freestyle.

These kites appeared around the 1990s and have gained many followers around the world. You can easily see them at festivals and competitions. They are known by many names:

• in French: cerf-volant 4 lignes, révo, révolution;
• in English: quad kites, quads, quad line kites, revs, rev-styles, revolutions, four line kites, four lines;
• in German: vierleiner stabdrachens, vierleiners;
• in Italian: aquilone a 4 cavi, rev.

These kites may seem harder to fly than dual-line kites at first. After a few hours, they become very rewarding: they offer precise control, clean stops, reverse flight and a different way to play with the wind.

We focus on quad-line kites, but we do not fly with blinders on. Many pilots also enjoy dual-line and single-line kites, and some topics naturally cross those boundaries.

When a resource is useful beyond quad-line kites, we keep the door open.
